Strangely enough, we reckon the duty plus VAT should come to about £10,000, but she only paid £3,000; this is understood to be only a temporary payment.
  
• Gold Bullion Price hit an 18 year low of $276.50 on January 13, 1998, having fallen 1/3 in one year, from $417 per ounce in February 1997. The Asian economic crisis was a major factor. At least 178 miners died in flooding of one of the most productive Tanzanite mines in Tanzania.
  
• There is a new diamond simulant called Moissanite which gives a positive reading on thermal diamond testers used by most jewellers.
  
• There is a new patented method of producing invisible diamond setting, which will be called the Millenium Collection.
  
• Glass Filled Diamonds continue to be imported and sold in the UK, and can fool even knowledgable jewellers.
  
• NBC Television had a diamond appraised at £13,500; when they took it round New York's diamond district, they received offers as low as $60. Other offers included $150 and $1,350. Some jewellers even said it was cubic zirconia or glass.
